Choosing the right cultivar is crucial for managing risks and optimizing crop yields. Cultivars vary in several key traits, including how well they adapt to specific regions, their yield potential and stability, agronomic qualities, and resistance to diseases, pests, and aluminum toxicity.

While no single cultivar is ideal for every situation, farmers can select a combination of cultivars that reduces or offsets the most significant risks associated with wheat production on their specific farm or area. Ultimately, choosing a cultivar is an economic decision that involves balancing potential risks with the desired yield.

Wheat cultivars are classified as winter, intermediate, or spring types according to their cold requirements.

They are divided into three production categories:

Dryland, Irrigation, and Western Cape:

All Types

SAS 3111

SA Seed 3111 boasts exceptional wide area adaptability with top performance in the ARC national trials. High yield potential, good aluminum tolerance, and excellent standability due to its shorter straw length. It has a high cold requirement, making it more suitable for early plantings.

SAS 3161

SA Seed 3161 has good yield potential and wide area adaptability, with exceptionally strong seedling vigor and shorter straw length for excellent standability. Offers resistance to Russian Wheat Aphid and good aluminum tolerance.

SAS 3373

SA Seed 3373 is a top performer in the Eastern and Western Free State, SAS 3373 is a high-yielding cultivar particularly suited for supplementary irrigation.

SAS 3497

The medium late grower SAS 3497 is ideal for early plantings, with excellent yield potential and top performance across irrigation areas in South Africa. Features good stooling capacity, grading characteristics, and tolerance to Stripe Rust. Susceptible to Leaf Rust and Stem Rust.

SAS 3584

SAS 3584 is SA Seed's new generation cultivar in the medium growth class, setting a new yield standard. Known for good straw strength, standability, and resistance to Stripe and Leaf rust pathotypes.

SAS 3681

Top performer in the early growing period, suitable for medium to late planting dates. Shorter straw makes it ideal for higher seeding rates and late planting. Competes favorably with medium grower wheat cultivars and is resistant to Stripe Rust, Leaf Rust, and Stem Rust.

SAS 3774

High-yielding cultivar with good straw strength and standability. Shows good resistance to current Leaf Rust and Stripe Rust pathogenic types, making it well-suited for dryland cultivation in the Western Cape.

SAS 3783

Has a high yield potential, good straw strength, and standability. Shows good resistance to current Leaf Rust and Stripe Rust pathogenic types, making it well-suited for dryland cultivation in the Western Cape.

SAS 3855

High yield potential with good straw strength and standability. Shows good resistance to current Leaf Rust and Stripe Rust pathogenic types, making it well-suited for dryland cultivation in the Western Cape.

SAS 3976

SAS 3976 has a high yield potential, good straw strength, standability and shows good resistance to current Leaf Rust and Stripe Rust pathogenic types. SAS 3976 is very well suited to dryland cultivation in the Western Cape, as supported by its performance in the ARC test results. SAS 3976 is extremely suitable for late plantings, the rapid growth period means that even a short rainy season has the potential to produce a harvest.
